The Brief

Clockhouse Nursery prides itself on its quality plants, coupled with quick and efficient service.

Improvement to the customer experience could be achieved through investment in a new till system, but this was unthinkable in their tired and dated building. Clockhouse also wanted to ensure a more comfortable temperature for customers and employees all year round.

The Solution

In consultation with Clockhouse, we created a design with the same footprint as the existing building but that provided much more usable space. The new building would meet all of their requirements for improving the internal environment and security, and most importantly, overcome planning permissions setbacks that had been experienced in the past. It needed a traditional look and feel, but with all the energy benefits enabled through modern materials and design.

David Mills, Clockhouse Nursery’s owner, said: “Positioned as they are in front of the exit, our cashiers are definitely feeling the benefit of the new automatic doors – they’re not constantly cold with doors left open any more!”

The site’s design and delivery challenges notably included integrating the new structure with existing buildings on a sloping hillside whilst ensuring everything tied together safely and seamlessly, ensuring all the while that Clockhouse stayed open for business! As usual we had a clear programmed managed plan, but we also expect the unexpected; in this case our expert delivery teams had to be flexible to work closely with and around local groundworks contractors, making ‘on-site’ adjustments to accommodate the various ground levels.

“Once started, the new building went up very quickly,” continued David. “The steelwork was erected in 6-7 days, the roof was on in about 4 more and it took no longer than 3 days to clad the sides. We remained open throughout!

“Because of the slopes, the levels all had to be adjusted to enable the doors to operate smoothly, but Newspan soon sorted that for us. In fact, their team was brilliant – nothing was a problem.”

Special Projects

Newspan’s structures can be adapted to suit many public access applications.
