Thompson's Garden Centre

As part of an ongoing programme of improvements at Thompson’s Garden Centre, Newspan recently delivered a challenging retail glasshouse refurbishment in which the entire 4,000sq ft building was raised by approximately half a metre to meet the client’s brief.  New insulated gutters were installed and new roof vents and lights were also fitted.

"Traditionally glasshouses – particularly older ones – can be leaky and damp, and at this time of year problems like condensation can really come to the fore too," said Paul Alford of Thompson's. "This refurbishment has provided our customers with a much more comfortable shopping environment. The increased height of the building makes it feel lighter and airier, plus it’s warmer and brighter."

The benefits of the refurbishment – including reduced heating costs during cold weather – won’t just be apparent in the autumn and winter though.  Going into spring and summer, the replacement of glazing with insulated sheeting will ensure sun-damage and fading to Thompson’s stock are a thing of the past, and the temperature in warm weather will be easier to control, thanks to the new roof ventilation system.  “Changing the glass to cladding has made a world of difference to the appearance and ambience of the building – yet it’s predominantly the same structure” continued Paul.  “We’re very pleased with the work so far and are looking forward to Newspan’s return in January to refurbish another of our retail buildings.”

In our next contract at Thompson’s Garden Centre, Newspan will be working on an adjoining 860 sq ft glasshouse, replacing the roof, the cladding to one side and two gables and installing two new automatic doors to help the five-centre family-run Thompson’s group deliver their objectives for continued development and growth.
