The old greenhouse at Clockhouse Nursery in Enfield was replaced by Newspan in a 4 week programme in October 2017.
The new 450 sq m building features Kingspan wall panels which have been overclad in black timber. The roof is a Kingspan tile effect panel, which offers a traditional appearance that satisfied planners, but at the same time delivers all the thermal benefits expected of a modern new insulated retail building.
The site is on a hill, and the main building needed doors on three different levels. The entrance was a foot higher than the exit before, and the new building had to meet up with existing pathways and canopies – quite a challenge!
“After groundworks to level the large car park, the new building went up very quickly,” said David Mills, Clockhouse Nursery’s owner. “The steelwork was erected in 6-7 days, the roof was on in about 4 more and it took no longer than 3 days to clad the sides. We were open throughout!
“The old structure had standard greenhouse posts every three metres. Now, we have much more internal usable space. Choosing clad rather than glazed sides maximised wallspace for stock – the building is north facing and gets plenty of light from the double glazed apex entrance anyway.
“Our focus is purely on plants and gardening, not gifts and a café – our customers like to get what they came for quickly. A big upgrade of our tills would have been unthinkable in the leaky old greenhouse, but the new building is both a reliable and secure environment to contain our sizeable investment into the new system. And, positioned in front of the exit, our cashiers are definitely feeling the benefit of the new automatic doors – they’re not constantly cold with doors left open any more!
“Because of the slopes, the levels all had to be adjusted to enable the doors to operate smoothly, but Newspan soon sorted that for us. In fact, their team was brilliant – nothing was a problem.”
